Nature in the municipality Roerdalen

In terms of nature, the municipality of Roerdalen is best known for De Meinweg National Park. This national park is enclosed on three sides by Germany and forms part of the Dutch-German Maas-Swalm-Nette cross-border nature reserve. De Meinweg National Park stretches across approximately 1,800 hectares in total. The De Boshut visitors’ centre provides information about all there is to see and do in the park and the surrounding area.

In addition to the national park itself, there are a number of smaller nature reserves in Herkenbosch, Vlodrop, Montfort, Sint-Odiliënberg, Melick and Posterholt, such as Munnichsbos and De Linnerheide. It’s also worth visiting the spiritual MERU woodland park which is beautifully designed and very well maintained.

Kasteel Montfort dates from 1260 and was for centuries one of the largest castles in the Netherlands.
It was built by Hendrik van Gelre, on a ridge in the watery Vlootbeek valley. Because of this location, the polygonal ground plan and the thick natural stone walls, it was practically impregnable. After Hendrik's death in 1285, castle Montfort belonged to the county of Gelre.
