With a cross-border cycling project, the neighbouring communities of Brüggen and Beesel have shown visitors that the region has worked well together for centuries. In 2007, the plans for a cycle route in Beesel began a year later and the interest of the community of Brüggen increased. The joint route is approximately 67 kilometres long and can be ridden in two parts of the day or day stages.
One route starts in Brüggen and is 34 km long, the route in Beesel is 33 km long. There are more than 30 interesting and important cultural and historical points to discover on both routes. In Brüggen, these include the castle, the Kreuzherrenkloster and the Rochuskapelle, as well as the former ammunition depot in the Brachter forest. In Beesel you will also see sights from different centuries. For example, you have the ‘Grietjens gerecht’, this is the place where the inhabitants were hanged centuries ago. It was founded on burial mounds, which were made about 4500 years ago. The Maas and its tributaries are literally the lifeline of the region.
The booklet with the cultural-historical cycle route Brüggen - Beesel is available at the tourist office in Reuver.
